Travel High
Would a mandatory year of world travel after high school graduation be helpful in reducing fundamentalism?
Now I know that this isn’t realistic, but this is more of a hypothetical.
It seems that the more people travel and learn about other cultures, the more moderated and tolerant they become. I can’t help but think that if every person saw a bit more of the world, religious fundamentalism would be greatly reduced. There will always be fundamentalists…some people really get off on the judging…but actually being immersed in other cultures can have a huge effect. Yes, I speak from experience.
So…thoughts?
I completely agree with you. Not only for helping to reduce fundamentalism, but for understanding the world in general. People have no idea the bubble they live in until they’ve traveled and seen for themselves how poor and underprivileged other countries are, how our media manipulates our point of view and distorts reality, etc. You gain empathy, understanding, appreciation for what you have, and more graciousness from traveling abroad. I have traveled overseas quite a bit and it has changed me as a person.
